节分端午自谁言,万古传闻为屈原;

Who put forward the Dragon Boat Festival?

The rumors of ages are for Qu yuan;

To laugh at the emptiness of the Chu river,

which cannot prove Qu yuan's innocence.

The Dragon Boat Festival lies in the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, and is one of the traditional festivals that originated in China.

In the Warring States Period of ancient China, Qu yuan, a poet from the state of Chu (Hubei Province Nowadays) jumped into the Miluo River to commit suicide with a stone in this day. To commemorate his patriotic behavior, people took this day as a festival. Some parts of China also take this day as a commemoration day for Mr. Wu Zixu or Miss Cao E.

The Dragon Boat Festival as well as the Spring Festival, the Qingming festival and the Mid-Autumn festival are known as the four traditional festivals of China.

Since 2008, the Dragon Boat Festival has been listed as a national holiday. In May 2006, the state council announced it as one item of the first national intangible cultural heritage list. In September 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) examined and approved the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival as one of the world intangible cultural heritages, which became the first Chinese world heritage festival.
